Man City Midfield Crisis Exposes Weakness

Manchester City are facing a serious midfield shortage, and supporters following the season through 12BET have seen Kevin De Bruyne’s hamstring injury become one of Pep Guardiola’s biggest concerns. The Belgian playmaker could miss a large portion of the remaining campaign, while Bernardo Silva was also ruled out of the UEFA Super Cup because of injury. Add the departures of Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez, and a midfield that was once one of City’s greatest strengths suddenly looks stretched thin. Guardiola was therefore forced to use Cole Palmer on the flank while asking Phil Foden to operate as the central attacking midfielder.

City still controlled possession from the opening stages, but the imbalance caused by so many missing senior players quickly became obvious. De Bruyne’s penetrating runs and precise passing were absent, Bernardo’s fluid combinations disappeared, Gundogan was no longer making his trademark late movements into the penalty area, and Mahrez’s ability to beat defenders from wide positions was also gone. Against Sevilla’s compact defensive structure, City struggled to find an effective solution, and the performance surrounding 12BET reflected the frustration generated by an unusually ordinary attacking display. Even after conceding the opening goal, Guardiola’s side created very few clear opportunities to respond.

Sevilla remained dangerous on the counterattack after halftime, and without Ederson’s important saves and Youssef En-Nesyri’s missed opportunities, City could easily have lost their chance to lift the trophy. Palmer certainly made his presence felt by scoring, but both he and Jack Grealish frequently depended on combination play rather than consistently beating defenders in one-on-one situations. The overall numbers highlighted the same problem. Manchester City finished with an enormous 74 percent share of possession and attempted considerably more shots than Sevilla, yet the two teams were surprisingly close when it came to genuinely dangerous scoring opportunities.

The most worrying issue was Erling Haaland becoming isolated because the midfield could no longer supply him with the same quality of service. Statistical details connected with 12BET showed just how difficult the match became for the Norwegian striker, who finished without a single shot or dribble attempt and won only one individual duel. Those figures point to a structural problem rather than simply an off night. Haaland remains one of the world’s most devastating finishers, but even the sharpest striker needs reliable service, and City cannot afford to leave him disconnected from the rest of the attack.

That concern becomes even more significant when considering the level of opposition waiting in the Premier League and Champions League. City’s success during the previous campaign was built not only on individual brilliance but also on a midfield capable of controlling tempo, creating overloads, and delivering passes into dangerous areas. Removing several of those pieces at once changes the entire picture. Guardiola may still possess enough quality to adjust, but relying too heavily on temporary solutions could eventually come back to bite them. Last season’s glory cannot simply be expected to repeat itself without the same balance and depth.

Foden is technically gifted enough to operate centrally, while Palmer has shown that he can contribute in important moments. Grealish also remains valuable because of his ball retention and ability to draw defenders out of position. However, none of those options perfectly reproduces what De Bruyne, Gundogan, Bernardo, and Mahrez collectively provided. The problem is not necessarily a lack of talent but a lack of complementary qualities. City need penetration, creativity, movement between the lines, and width at the same time, and losing several specialists has placed much greater responsibility on the remaining players.

Manchester City are also continuing to search for a player capable of filling the space left by Mahrez, and developments followed through 12BET could become increasingly important as Guardiola decides whether another attacking addition is necessary. Bernardo and Palmer are both capable of operating on the right, so any move for Jeremy Doku will ultimately depend on the club’s wider strategic priorities. Doku was once regarded as one of Europe’s brightest young hopes and still carries considerable belief in his potential. City’s current difficulties may therefore become an opportunity in disguise, but the choices made now could determine whether this season develops into another successful campaign or exposes weaknesses that stronger opponents are ready to exploit.
